Art Advisor Collection Management for Beginning and Expert Collectors

If you are searching for any of the following topics:

The Art Advisor! can provide assistance.

An art advisor is a full-time, recognized professional engaged to help the new or established collector in every aspect of the formation and maintenance of a collection. The consultant should be expected to discuss with his client and then oversee matters of research, connoisseurship, acquisition, conservation, insurance, installation and sales of the works when required. He is not a dealer and has no financial position in the works which are of interest to his client.

An experienced consultant, to best serve his clients, should bring to his profession considerable experience and wide ranging interest in diverse fields of collecting. He should demonstrate strong connections with the market in the U.S. and abroad. Above all he should represent the highest standards of judgment in matters of quality, authenticity and condition of works and his integrity should be beyond question.

Many people collect entirely on their own, seeking advice only from dealers in their respective field of interest, and many enjoy success and great pleasure approaching collecting in this way. However, the market presents as many problems as pleasures for the collector in the search for quality and authenticity. A key benefit of choosing to work with the independent consultant is the promise of the their objectivity in the advice and counsel which he offers to his client. A desired image or object should be approached with caution and deliberate consideration.

The dedication is to the client's satisfaction and real pleasure in his works. The contribution is his experience and a thorough understanding of the market, and the goals of his client. The medium is time. A retainer, the amount of which has been discussed and agreed upon, is paid by the client to the consultant. Alternatively a commission can be established by the client and by the consultant should the client prefer, or if the scope of the collecting project suggests such an alternative.

In my view, the first concern of a consultant is to get to know the client, his tastes, his collecting objectives and the financial considerations which will support those objectives. In many cases, I can help the client discover and focus upon a specific period of history, a style or range of works. The consultant serves an influential role, but his goal should be to encourage the collector to develop his own personal vision. The consultant can initiate consideration of a field of collecting, propose a specific work, support the collector in his search. The final decision regarding acquisition or any other matter related to the purchase rests, of course, with the client. It is the owner who will live with and enjoy what he has acquired.

The paintings, drawings, sculpture and works presented here are in private holdings which have benefited from the services offered to clients by Robert C. Moeller III. These examples represent something of the wide range and standard or exceptional quality which my clients have come to expect.
